Studies of society and environment involve students expanding their knowledge and understanding, developing their skills and clarifying their values. This will enable children now and as adults, to participate as active and informed citizens within a socially just, environmentally sustainable, democratic society and global community.
The curriculum is organised into six strands:
- Time, continuity and change – through studying significant events in Australian history and analysis of the different groups within society.
- Place & Space – Students examine aspects of the places in which they or others live and how these change over time.
- Culture – Deals with the way people group or share their understanding of the world.
- Resources – Investigates the nature and use of resources.
- Natural & Social Systems – Looks at the relationship and integration of physical, biological, social and cultural worlds.
- Investigations, Communication and Participation – Involves the processes required for an understanding of the other five strands.
Learning in this subject is integrated across other areas of study and a range of student centred teaching methods are used.
